Sedation dentistry means administering drugs to calm the patient and put them in a sleep-like state. The patient becomes emotionally and physically relaxed and sedated. At the same time, the patient is awake enough to talk, move and follow the dentist’s instructions and all vital reflexes are maintained. For sedation, a professionally trained anaesthesiologist injects a sedative into the patient’s vein. The sedative does not have a very strong effect, making most patients feel relaxed and at ease. At Kliinik 32, we use midazolam solution as the sedative.
Following sedation, the patient recovers in the recovery room and is sent home after they have fully woken up, feel no pain or nausea and a friend or a family member has come to pick them up. In the following 24 hours after sedation, the patient may feel slightly faint or drowsy. For that reason, we recommend that another adult stays with the patient until the next morning.
Sedatives are not administered during pregnancy. Sedative drugs are also contraindicated for people with certain neurological and muscle diseases as well as people who are sensitive to the sedative drugs. The patient should not have infectious diseases accompanied by fever or any respiratory infections.
For safety reasons, the patient is not allowed to eat for four hours before sedation dentistry and to drink any fluids two hours prior to the procedure. In the event that sedation causes complications during treatment and obstructs the treatment, the procedure will be discontinued. Sedation dentistry is a generally safe procedure and patients easily recover from it.
Sedation dentistry at Kliinik 32 is carried out by an anaesthesiologist.
